From The "I Really Wouldn't Be The World's Worst Parent" File.

Back in the darkest days of Bloodthirsty Bush, as this country was planning to go to war to supply his shits and giggles and I was one of 6 people who seemed to be arguing against it, one of the lines of logic I would try was that one of the reasons you should be very, very, deliberate before you committed to something like this was because it would break a good number of the people you sent over to do your fighting for you. That some of them, upon return, would be animals after what we were gonna put them through.

I never used the argument about how we were going to kill lots of innocent people who neither asked for this war nor voluntarily signed an enlistment contract. That argument never went anywhere. Sometimes though, in those dark days of 2003, the argument about breaking our fellow citizens would go forward an inch or two. Usually among people who had experience with vets who returned from Vietnam.

From Monday's news chatter:

An Army sergeant who served in Iraq for 15 months has been restricted to his Washington military base after being accused of waterboarding his 4-year-old daughter because she refused to recite her ABCs.
Joshua Ryan Tabor, 27, was arrested on Jan. 31 and charged with assaulting a child after police in Yelm, Wash., responded to a call of a disturbance at Tabor's home and then later found the little girl hiding in a locked bathroom, according to Police Chief Todd Stancil.
Both the girl and the father admitted to the torture, even detailing how Tabor would sit the girl on the edge of the bathroom sink and hold her head down until it was nearly submerged in water, dunking her if she refused to recite the alphabet, said Stancil.
In the police report, the girl told authorities that "Daddy was upset becuase she wouldn't say her letters" and that he then put her in the water.
"It was hot! The water was hot!" the girl told police, according to the incident report. "I told him I would say my letters then! My heart shirt got wet."
Tabor told authorities that "his purpose was to punish her by putting her in the water because he knows she is afraid of it and he wanted her to cooperate."
"She said her letters after that," Tabor told the cops.

"My heart shirt got wet." I just had to stop and pull myself together for a bit.

And where do you suppose this Sergeant America learned the techniques he used to secure the cooperation of a 4-year old girl?

The blood continues to soak into the palms of Mr. Bush. Ours and theirs. It will for some time.

I really rather would not have been proven right like this.

I bet I could write a really good hate mail for you. One with proper english, logic, and sound arguments. But I frickin love you man, and the people that spew the hate are obviously not intelligent enough to enjoy the writing that you do. Keep up the great work!

This "hopey/changey" thing is not going as well as I was told it would though...
I am no Bush fan but I am certainly no Obama fan either. What a toolbag...

I see some of the commentors are really on their liberal high- horses today. Lets not forget people that your savior Obama is the one who has INCREASED the number of our young men and women involved in Bush's "vanity war" and has made NO real attempt to resolve this whole issue. You can blame Bush for starting it but you must also place blame on the one who lets it continue. If Bush is such a bastard for starting the war, what is Obama for letting it continue AND increasing our involvement in it? He is not without sin.

PharmJam...'hopey/changey'? Are you out there in the trenches? Wishing and criticizing is for people that don't want to upend themselves from their bums.

Yeah, but the point is...she told us the letters. I'd waterboard a thousand little girls to save Americans from illiteracy.

Maybe if we can throw her in Guantanamo for six years we can finally learn our colors.

OK I love a good rant. I am a little bothered by huge gap in logic/knowledge as to what actually has to happen before the US (and most other non dictatorial nations)goes to war. Nobody in the executive hotseat gets to wave a little wand stamp a foot and all the drones march out to their little tanks and planes and makes boom boom on the neighbors. Many, many people are involved and you know it. Yet you love oversimplifying to make a victim which I admit makes for great posts. However, it feels as though you think we are just as deficient as the incompetent drug seekers who scar your days and haunt your nights. Careful there dude. This type of ____ is a bad guy/girl and everything is his/her/its fault is equivalent to the guy who hands you a script to be filled that uses the words "morepheen" and "1 gallon". Up your game. You are smart and so are we.

Alas, DM, those who connected the dots before the US invaded Iraq are the same ones who connect the dots afterward. The folks who think Iraq was a great idea tend to be the ones who can't see the connection between a national policy endorsing torture and a soldier waterboarding his kid.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. All child abuse is Bush's fault. Simple. No need for further explaination.

I have a nasty hangnail on my right index finger. Damn that George Bush. I can't wait until Obama heals it for me.

Mierek,

Too funny how the very next commenter perfectly illustrates your point....:)

He never saw what you wrote, as both comments were published at the same time.

If the stakes were not so high, these people would be fucking hilarious.

Well DM, you may want to reconsider having kids. The right wing, no birth control taking, war mongers are spitting out kids left and right. Geuss what, they are all being raised to think the same way. No question we need some balance in this world. It is up to you to do your part.

Oh for fuck's sake. Now the war is OBAMA's fault? The man walked into an absolutely NO WIN situation. Pull out? That would have been irresponsible and FOX would have had a field day with it. There were few choices available to him. Do you think ANYONE wanted to see more troops go over? Use your head. He didn't get a magic wand with the presidency.

Obama will, sadly, be cleaning up messes left for him for quite a while. I know that isn't an excuse for every decision he has made as a president- which I'm not defending- but blaming the war on him is ridiculous.

I posted this article on my facebook and got screamed at by a military wife b/c the evil, liberal elite media is misportraying the military again. I mean, there's no evidence that his military experience had anything to do with this situation, she claimed. Because, what? He learned waterboarding at his local community center?

Our troops come home wounded- both in body and mind. As a nation, and as a field (I'm a budding psychologist) we need to step up and meet those needs. His military service doesn't EXCUSE what he did- but it is a symptom of a huge problem that we need to address. The rates of substance abuse and child/spousal abuse in returning soldiers- especially those of long or repeated deployments- is high. And we need to address that.

That isn't watere boarding, not even close. If this has been ant other person than someone wearing mint green, it'd have flown under the radar of "just another child abuse case." I was a Human Intelligence Collector (read:interrogator) for our Army for 5 years, and while I "never" water boarded anyone, the tradecraft is covered by our intel school at Ft. Huachuca.

Dunking your child's head under water is not waterboarding. This guy has a screw loose and is abusive - Thats true, but to attribute that behavior to his time in service is silly. How about we ask where the hell the mother was, instead. That sounds like a good question, although it isn't such a good topic for an anti-Bush anti-War post.

Anonymous said...

Mother? Yes,let's blame the mother rather than examine the possibility that soldiers come back wounded in more ways than one. Perhaps it isn't a case of PTSD but it certainly sheds a light on the increased rate of abuse in military families after terms of service.

Silly rabbit, that isn't how you waterboard somebody at all! Those vets do come home twisted tho, my friend back on leave just knifed this kid at a bar last week
